Okay ladies, here's the deal: We were planning to start TTC #3 very soon, but I've had five positive pregnancy tests so I'm pretty sure we got there a little sooner than expected! Cool

Complicating things is the fact that I'm bleeding and nervous about it... if I were going to a doctor I would call them right away to have my hcg levels checked, but I'm going to be seeing a midwife for this pregnancy and I'm not sure what to do.

It's even more complicated because I don't have a midwife chosen yet. I have three that I want to interview, so I'm not sure if I should do the interviews and then worry about confirmation, or go to a doctor's for confirmation and advice on the bleeding before I get to interview the midwives, etc.

I'm also not sure how appointments with midwives work... With my doctors they wanted you to call and get the confirmation blood test right away, then they scheduled your first appointment for soon after. Does it work the same way with midwives? Do they even DO a blood test, and how soon do they want to start seeing you? Do you go every month?

Thanks for any help... I'm probably making this extra-complicated, but things just aren't going quite like I had planned and I wasn't fully prepared!

Oh, Chandra, WOW - congratulations! I *so* hope things settle down for you and quickly. Hang in there, little one! (said in the direction of your uterus)

When I got pregnant, I saw Barb in Hastings and they had me wait to come in until I had a positive pregnancy test (you're already there) and then they just did a urine test. I think my first actual prenatal appointment was probably about when I was eight weeks, so about 4 weeks later.

I think after that it was pretty standard - once a month, and then was it once every two weeks for a while?, then once a week, although with scheduling, it wasn't exact. I only had my blood drawn once, whenever is standard, maybe 20 or 24 weeks? (Funny how you forget things.) But if you're having some funky business, it may very well be different.

So . . . follow your heart. I know my tendency would be to want to hurry up and figure out who I wanted to see and then go with it, but if you feel you need to see someone more quickly, do it. It's not uncommon for a woman to change providers during her pregnancy - you may remember that I learned in January that my midwife was planning to move out of state in February, and I was due in March! Thank the Lord she stayed.

And, since I "know" you, I don't think you'll mind if I speak to Him about this matter on your behalf. Hope things smooth out for you soon!

Just to update everyone... I went in for a blood test today and it turns out that I miscarried. I would still really appreciate some information about normal CNM appointments, though. Thanks.

Oh, Chandra, I'm so sorry you lost your baby! Anything I type seems so trite. I'll keep you in my prayers.

One other thing that surprised me about seeing a midwife is that I didn't get a vag exam for a really, really long time - I didn't need one since things were going fine. A former co-worker had told me that she'd never even had a pap before she got pregnant and was really shocked at her first prenatal. (BAD doctor didn't even say what he was going to do!)

Chandra, there are not sufficient words, but here's the best I can do. I am sorry for your loss and I wish you much baby dust in the future.

I've had an early miscarriage too. Everyone's experience is so unique, so I won't claim I know how it is for you. The only thing I can say is ignore the insensitive comments (hopefully you won't get any).

Thanks ladies... Kathie, unfortunately I've been through this twice before (one very early, one a little later) so I know the comments you mean. Thankfully we hadn't told many people, so I didn't have to hear too much that I didn't want to hear.
